What Is...

Localism

Localism is a movement that emphasizes the importance of local control, decision-making, and self-reliance within communities. It often advocates for decentralization of power from larger governing bodies, such as national or regional governments, to local governments or communities.

The principles of localism can manifest in various ways, including:

  1. Local Governance: Promoting local decision-making processes and policies that prioritize the needs and interests of the community members.

  2. Community Empowerment: Encouraging community involvement in decision-making processes and fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents.

  3. Economic Development: Supporting local businesses, industries, and initiatives to promote economic growth and sustainability within the community.

  4. Cultural Preservation: Valuing and preserving local traditions, customs, languages, and heritage.

  5. Environmental Sustainability: Prioritizing environmentally-friendly practices and conservation efforts that benefit local ecosystems and natural resources.

  6. Resilience: Building resilience against external shocks or crises by fostering strong social networks, local economies, and infrastructure.

Localism can be seen as... a response to globalization and centralization trends, as well as a way to address issues of governance efficiency, community cohesion, and cultural identity. It can be found in various political ideologies, including but not limited to libertarianism, communitarianism, and certain forms of conservatism and progressivism.
